Worship

“For you only are holy. For all the nations will come and worship before you” (Revelation 15:4). When God made humans, He instilled in us the need to worship — to recognize the omnipotent Being Who gave us life.

When the disciples met the newly resurrected Jesus, He told them to “Rejoice!” But the only thing they wanted to do was worship Him (Matthew 28:9).

All creation testifies to God’s power, but worship sets humanity apart from all other created things. It is a fundamental part of who we are.

What are elements of true worship?

John 4:23

But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers.

Wise men seek to worship Jesus

Matthew 2:1-2

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.”

Worship only God

Matthew 4:10

Then Jesus said to him, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’ ”

God is worthy of worship

Revelation 4:10-11

The twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives forever and ever, and throw their crowns before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, the Holy One, to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created!”

All nations will worship God

Revelation 15:4

Who wouldn’t fear you, Lord, and glorify your name? For you only are holy. For all the nations will come and worship before you. For your righteous acts have been revealed.

Courage to refuse to worship false gods

Daniel 3:17-18

If it happens, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image which you have set up.

Worship gives glory to God

Revelation 14:7

He said with a loud voice, “Fear the Lord, and give him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and the springs of waters!”

When worship is worthless

Mark 7:7

But they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
