Will
“Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” the old proverb claims.
Throughout Scripture, God calls His children to have courage, fortitude, and strength of character. Of course, He also asks us to practice humility and obedience. He knows we have wills of our own. He created us with free will, after all. But when what we want is contrary to where God is leading, the faithful child of God will echo Christ’s words before He endured Calvary: “Even so, not my will, but Yours” (Matthew 26:39).
Jesus did not come to do His own will; He did God’s will while on earth
John 5:30
I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is righteous, because I don’t seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me.
God’s will is always more important than my own
Matthew 26:39, 42
He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire.” Again, a second time he went away and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cup can’t pass away from me unless I drink it, your desire be done.”
Willful sin, deliberately going against the truth I know, brings swift, sure punishment
Hebrews 10:26-27
For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remains no more a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which will devour the adversaries.
Doing God’s will requires strong character, but brings great reward
Hebrews 10:35-36
Therefore don’t throw away your boldness, which has a great reward. For you need endurance so that, having done the will of God, you may receive the promise.
True service and good will come from the heart
Ephesians 6:5-7
Servants, be obedient to those who according to the flesh are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as to Christ, not in the way of service only when eyes are on you, as men pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with good will doing service as to the Lord, and not to men.
Those who mock God willfully forget truths they know about Him
2 Peter 3:3-7
Knowing this first, that in the last days mockers will come, walking after their own lusts and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For, from the day that the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.” For this they willfully forget that there were heavens from of old, and an earth formed out of water and amid water by the word of God, by which means the world that existed then, being overflowed with water, perished. But the heavens that exist now and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
God’s kingdom is where His will is done
Luke 11:2
He said to them, “When you pray, say, ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.’”
Jesus came to do God’s will; It is God’s will that we are sanctified through Christ
Hebrews 10:8-10
Previously saying, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you didn’t desire, neither had pleasure in them” (those which are offered according to the law), then he has said, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He takes away the first, that he may establish the second, by which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
I willingly give back to God from the bounty with which He has blessed me
1 Chronicles 29:14-17
But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from you, and we have given you of your own. For we are strangers before you, and foreigners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no remaining. Prophecy does not come from human will, but from the divine
2 Peter 1:21
For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit.
It is God’s will that believing in Jesus makes me a child of God
John 1:12-13
But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name: who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
