Bible verses about
Pride

In wise King Solomon’s mind, pride paved the way to ruin. “Pride goes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18 WEB).

Pride is deceptive (Jeremiah 49:16), causing people to think they are smarter, stronger, and more powerful than they truly are. Pride may even tempt a person to envision themself equal to God. But the God who abhorred the sin of pride in Amos 6:8 is the same God who commands His children to cast pride aside and practice humility today.

Pride is a sin that God will avenge

Psalm 59:10, 12

My God will go before me with his loving kindness. God will let me look at my enemies in triumph. For the sin of their mouth, and the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride, for the curses and lies which they utter.

Pride is at odds with God Himself

James 4:6

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

God judges the proud

1 Samuel 2:3

Don’t keep talking so exceedingly proudly. Don’t let arrogance come out of your mouth, for the LORD is a God of knowledge. By him actions are weighed.

Love is not proud

1 Corinthians 13:4

Love is patient and is kind. Love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud...

God will remove the proud from His presence

Zephaniah 3:11

In that day you will not be disappointed for all your doings, in which you have transgressed against me; for then I will take away out from among you your proudly exulting ones, and you will no more be arrogant in my holy mountain.

Pride is on Jesus’ list of evil things

Mark 7:21-23

For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts, covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Pride is a sin that God promises to destroy

Leviticus 26:18-20

If you in spite of these things will not listen to me, then I will chastise you seven times more for your sins. I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your sky like iron, and your soil like bronze. Your strength will be spent in vain; for your land won’t yield its increase, neither will the trees of the land yield their fruit.

Pride does not come from God

1 John 2:16

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s.

Pride is deceptive; God promises to cast the proud down

Obadiah 1:3-4

“The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high, who says in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’ Though you mount on high as the eagle, and though your nest is set among the stars, I will bring you down from there,” says the LORD.

God chooses the humble, so there is no room for pride

1 Corinthians 1:28-29

God chose the lowly things of the world, and the things that are despised, and the things that don’t exist, that he might bring to nothing the things that exist, that no flesh should boast before God.

The sins of pride and oppression are often found together

Ezekiel 16:49

Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters. She also didn’t strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
